When an editor asks me what I write about, I tell them that I'll write about anything. Really. But my main focus is the health and fitness realm, which has many (well-toned) arms to it. I've narrowed down the different areas that I mainly write about, with three examples from each below.
TRAVEL/OUTDOORS/ADVENTURE
When people hear that I write about travel, they think I'm off trekking in Tunisia or biking in Borneo. While I have been on exotic locations for assignments, including Australia and Morocco (to cover the Eco-Challenge races), in reality, I'm usually writing about travel as an insider, which means that I'm writing about things in my neck of the woods like the Oregon Coast, the Columbia River Gorge, or Mount Hood. Still, writing about this subject is fun because, like gear, it's a chance to get inside a reader's head and think about what she wants from a trip. I can also never resist a good Bumbling Idiot story, where I pen Megan's Misadventures. While this has become overdone lately, in a "I used to be the last one picked in kickball class and now look at me, falling on my butt in a snowboarding beginner class," I like to think that I have a knack for this type of writing because I have a way of getting in over my head and (luckily) living to tell the tale.
